‘Mallet or The Hands’ is a set of six individual contemporary black and white drawings on paper. Similar perhaps to a musical notation, its design is a site-specific response to the physical space of Lyon & Turnbull (Edinburgh). Built in 1820 by the Edinburgh architect, Archibald Eliot in the neo-classical style, it was originally conceived as a church. Briggs & Cole surveyed the building’s interior decoration: the intricate architectural details and decorations seen in the capitals, columns and woodwork of the central space. The four works on paper present these details as a graphical ‘score’ or indeed a ‘reading’, suggesting the rhythm and the beat of architecture. In many ways the drawings echo the catalogues of style and ornamentation produced by architects particularly in the 18th and 19th century. Here though Briggs and Cole have re-imagined the space in reductive black and white, paring back the extraneous and the decorative. The work’s intent is to guide the viewer and encourage one to both ‘feel’ and ‘listen’ to its physical context.
