About the artist:
Arp, a sculptor, poet, painter and printmaker, was a founding member of the international Dada movement, which arose in Europe during World War I. Dadaists embraced spontaneity, fantasy and the laws of chance as they sought to upend traditional aesthetics in response to the horrors of war.
Arp's use of biomorphic shapes derived from his depiction of objects from nature, like tree roots and stones, as simplified abstractions. Early on, he made collages using cut pieces of paper he let randomly fall on a larger background. This imagery, based on chance combinations of abstract organic shapes, comprised the personal visual vocabulary he called 'Object Language'.
