This area of Richter’s work is an essential component of the artist’s incredibly varied practice. In a conversation with Dieter Schwarz included in book, Richter explains, “Painting pictures is simply the official, the daily work, the profession, and in the case of the watercolors I can sooner afford to follow my mood, my spirits.” Many of the paintings reference both the figurative side and the squeegee style of the artist’s other works, but have a spontaneity unique to the medium of watercolour.
