Description
Pair of midcentury sconces with gilt brass and black details by Maison Arlus, France, mid-20th century (probably 1950s or 1960s). Each sconce has a large oval shade of acrylic or perspex, on an elegant frame of brass with black details. The shades are off-white with a textured surface which warms when lit, and sparkles and bounces natural light in a similar way to clear glass when switched off. The original frames of gilt brass are in very good condition. There is some age-appropriate wear to the delicate shades, including slight ageing of the acrylic, and original bonding on the sides; there are a few fine cracks near the holes as is often seen in this material, not structural and almost completely covered by the frame when in use (final two images). The wiring is original and currently configured to take one large bayonet fitting bulb per light. We advise the wiring is replaced in the country of installation to ensure it meets your local needs and regulations, we also recommend the use of low heat bulbs to protect these fixtures for the future. Approximate dimensions, per piece: H 18cm (wall frame) x W 30cm x D 17cm.
