Description

This very fine late 19th Century oil on canvas seascape painting depicting a marine landscape with rowing boats and a palace is signed lower right by Oscar Ricciardi (Naples 1864 – 1935), a talented painter who joined the School of Posillipo. This beautiful antique painting features a coastal scene near Naples in Southern Italy, on calm blue waters there is a rowing boat with another boat heading towards the rocky beach. On the left side of the painting there is the famous 17th Century Donn’Anna Palace in Posillipo that challenged the technical skills of several painters. This villa was owned by Don Ramiro Guzmán, duke of Medina de Las Torres and viceroy of Naples, built in 1642 for his wife Anna Carafa. A small rose pastel-colored village above and the Mount Vesuvius across the Bay of Naples in the distance complete this charming and magnificent view. The artist presents this tranquil scene with a very delicate palette of colours and has succeeded in adding great depth to the scenery.Since 1830 Posillipo, a renowned district on Neapolitan bay, become a cultural centre and source of inspiration for several artists from different countries such as the British William Turner, the French Corot and the Russians Sil'vestr Feodosievič Ščedrin and Ivan Konstantinovič Ajvazovskij. Some incredible views of the bay of Naples and its charming landscapes were depicted, among these Palazzo Donn’Anna was the subject favored by many artists including Oscar Ricciardi, a sensitive and popular artist considered the First Italian Impressionist with a romantic inspiration who worked for very important clients such as Duke of Aosta and the Duke of Connaught. The tone of light and brush stroke of the present work perfectly embody the experiences and the mind of the painter.
