Madonna and Child 19th Century Sculpture A Lanson c1881 Pewter Mary Jesus Marked A Lanson 1881 Rome The Pewter Sculpture is stamped on one side Heavy and in good condition for it's age Frame measures 46cm 18.11ins x 46cm 18.11ins 8cm 3.15ins Deep Alfred Desire Lanson 1851-1898 born in Orleans to a potter father, entered the Ecole des Beaux-arts in Paris at the age of eighteen, where he was a pupil of Pierre Louis Rouillard (1820-1881), by François Jouffroy (1806-1882) and Aimé Millet (1819-1891). He began at the Paris Salon in 1870 by exhibiting a bust and a plaster medallion. He exhibited there until 1897. In 1876, Alfred-Désiré Lanson won the first Grand Prix in Rome with "Jason removing the Golden Fleece" . Then he became a resident of the Villa Medici in Rome from 1877 to 1880. After obtaining a first class medal at the Salon of 1880, he received the Grand Prix at the Universal Exhibition of 1889. Alfred-Désiré Lanson is known, in particular, for his allegorical works inspired by Antiquity. He creates sculptures for the decoration of the Town Hall of Limoges. Promoted to officer of the Legion of Honor in May 1895, he died in Paris in 1898.
