Ettore Sottsass (1917–2007) was an Italian architect and designer during the 20th century. He is perhaps most celebrated as the founder of the Memphis Group, famous for its colourful and flamboyant furniture, ceramics and lighting pieces, brought to attention recently with the much anticipated auction of David Bowie’s private Memphis collection. This simple dining table attributed to Sottsass closely resembles one he designed for Poltronova, a well known Italian producer. Made from a spectacular rosso levanto marble, a deep burgundy with white graining, the top and base are joined by a minimal cyclindrical aluminium column. The stone top and base have been recently refinished by our restorer. During this restoration a previous repair to the top has come to light, a large chip which has almost seemlessly been replaced. This is not very noticable and does not affect the tables structural integrity.
