Description

Edith Wharton. Ethan Frome. Published by Charles Scribner & Sons, New York 1911. First edition. This is the novel that sealed Wharton's success as a novelist. Original red octavo cloth with gilt titles and top edge. With preliminary page and four pages of undated ads. In reference to the first issue of first printing, the word "wearily" is here printed unworn at the bottom of page 135. One of 2500 copies with gilt top edge. There were an additional 3500 copies with plain top edge and both appear with the word "wearily" both perfect and worn: This word became battered during the 6000-copy first print run.
