An early 20th century head of a bull, in the Minoan style, the base modelled with herringbone decoration.French, c. 1930,The ancient Minoans revered the bull and bulls are consistently depicted as objects of worship, sacrifices and in the famous ritualised sport of bull-leaping in Cretan art. The Minoan reverence for cattle appears to be the basis for the Attic Greek myth of the Minotaur.This sculpture is possibly based on the Bull’s Head rhyton from the Little Palace at Knossos.38 cm high
