Rare early 19th century Regency statuary marble and scagliola fire surround. The straight edged shelf is detailed with black and greens scagliola, below which the carved frieze is also inlaid with bows and swags, flanked by carved roundels with gold, red and green detailing. To the jambs fine dark reeds and bookmatched acanthus leaf detail, English, circa 1810. Scagliola or 'Bossi-work' named after Pietro Bossi one of the greatest scagliola artist of the 18th century is a composite substance made from selenite, glue and natural pigments, imitating marble and other hard stones to resemble inlays in marble and semi precious stones. This technique became popular in Italy in the 17th century and was imitated throughout Europe in the 19th century.
